1. Who is a Non-Resident Indian (NRI)?
An NRI is an Indian citizen who stays abroad for employment, business, or other purposes indicating an uncertain duration of stay. This includes those posted in UN organizations or deputed abroad by Indian government bodies. Non-resident foreign citizens of Indian origin are also considered NRIs.
2. Who is a PIO?
A Person of Indian Origin (PIO) is an individual (not a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal, or Bhutan) who has held an Indian passport, has Indian ancestry, or is married to an Indian citizen or PIO.
3. Can NRIs buy property in India?
Yes, the Reserve Bank of India permits NRIs, PIOs, and certain foreign citizens to buy residential and commercial properties in India without any special approval.
4. Can NRIs purchase commercial properties in India?
Yes, NRIs can buy both residential and commercial properties in India (excluding agricultural land, farmhouses, and plantations). Payments must be made via foreign remittance or from NRE/FCNR accounts through proper banking channels.
